Made Things Made New

A post-Easter free verse from our resident technologist.

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Revelation 21:5

All Things

What if one day our iPhones sing praise to the Lord?
wrest themselves from our grubby hands
What if these slabs of metal and glass pack up and join the stones?

If all things one day will be redeemed,
Why not the great artifice of postmodern man?
These wonders of our age – not pyramids or colossi for sure,
But you can visit the hanging gardens with your coffee!
In your slippers!
If we believe that all things will be made new
Who are we to say: “well not quite all” ?
Their troves of selfies transformed
into the imago dei.
Their silly sagas exchanged
For that which truly satisfies.

Their broadband connections dropped
For silent awe.
Their thousand forms of distraction merged

into a single chorus.

The quest for likes and loves abandoned
For a glimpse, perhaps a selfie with
Love himself.
All their former lives revealed as just
The silly self-important musings of distracted things
Slouching toward the new Jerusalem.

Perhaps even the dumbphones, discarded in some desk drawer,
or worse, the bottom of the toybox,
will find a way to offer a blip or a bleep from the depths of forgotten time.
If all things means all things,
then it also means the smallest things,
the vainest things,
Yea, even you and I dear sister, are promised glory.
